Collimated light towers

Two 1080×1080 upward-facing light towers using fresnel lenses to create collimated (parallel) light beams, not radial diffusion. Viewers look up into volumetric beams choreographed to music through a unified audio-visual algorithm where every musical event causes a corresponding graphic jump. 104-effect library. 20-scene dramaturgy.

The Research

Optical geometry derived from first principles. Fresnel lenses chosen specifically for their property: collimated light rays. The rig isn't designed: it's calculated. Source at focal point → collimated beam the size of lens aperture.

Materials Research: Material properties (fresnel geometry, lens surface treatment, haze interaction) are experimental variables in the study of perception, not decoration.

Technical Architecture:

  • Optical derivation: fresnel geometry + collimation theory

  • Audio-visual correlation: Strudel soundtrack synced to dramaturgy

  • Colour semantics: LATTICE appears only at tonal shifts

Innovation

Most AV installations treat sound and image as independent streams. Here they share structural DNA: one data source determines both via parallel algorithms. The audio-visual correlation is hard-wired into the score via a shared transfer figure.

The colour palette is a research decision: 9 of 10 effects are desaturated to monochrome. LATTICE is the sole chromatic element, appearing where the music empties or lifts. Colour marks a change of kind, not amount.
