KORRELATION turned Karl-Friedrich-Straße in Karlsruhe into an abstract underwater landscape that reacts to the people walking through it. ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe showed it in autumn 2020.

The installation ran from 8 September to 29 November 2020 on the stretch between the market square and Platz der Grundrechte, selected for the museum's “Seasons of Media Arts 2020” programme (ZKM). Projection, sound and sensor technology cover the street. Up to ten people can be part of the image at once, and their movement changes the world that appears beneath the “surface” (KORRELATION).

Highlights

From sensory play to data visualisation

Nearly three months in a public street

Later shown twice in Luxembourg

Karlsruhe and after

XENORAMA, the collective founded in 2014 by Marcel Bückner, Tim Heinze, Richard Oeckel, Lorenz Potthast and Moritz Richartz, had shown work at Karlsruhe's Schlosslichtspiele several times before KORRELATION (City of Media Arts). After Karlsruhe the work travelled to Luxembourg, to the European Capital of Culture programme of Esch-sur-Alzette and to elektron.

The piece works in two phases. The first is sensory: people walk, and the water answers. The second is driven by data and turns into a scientific visualisation of the same ecosystem (XENORAMA). Its subject is water, one of Earth's most precious resources.
