INTRO
Landscape of Perception is an immersive installation that explores the interplay between human cognition, sensory perception, and machine mediation. Participants are invited to enter a dynamic environment where their own brain activity directly influences the visual and auditory landscape around them.
The work creates a space for introspection and playful experimentation, highlighting how subtle shifts in attention and focus can shape both perception and experience.
Technical Description:
The installation integrates three core systems: EEG Control, AI-Driven Generative Visuals, Reactive Sound Environment
EEG Control: Participants wear non-invasive EEG headsets that capture real-time neural activity, including metrics related to attention and relaxation. These signals are streamed to the central processing system to influence environmental parameters.
AI-Driven Generative Visuals: Using machine-learning models trained on visual-sound datasets, the system generates evolving abstract landscapes. Variations in participants’ brain activity trigger changes in color, form, movement, and spatialization.
Sound-Reactive Environment: The space responds to both internal audio feedback generated by the AI system and external sounds from the environment or accompanying music. Lighting and projection elements are programmed to react in synchrony, creating a multi-layered, responsive sensory experience.
Key challenges
Conceptual Goals:
Landscape of Perception investigates the interface between human subjectivity and technological mediation. It foregrounds the participant’s role as both observer and co-creator, blurring the boundary between the digital and the physical. Rather than focusing on spectacle, the installation prioritizes subtlety, presence, and awareness, offering a reflective environment where visitors can explore the dynamics of perception, cognition, and interaction.
THE OUTCOME
Exhibition Context:
The installation was exhibited in the Boilerroom at the 2025 PACE Festival in Potsdam, leveraging the room’s industrial acoustics, concrete surfaces, and low-light conditions to enhance immersion. The work was situated alongside The Imaginator, creating a focused zone for experiential, interactive media within the festival’s broader program.
