POLYTOPE XIa opened Speicher XI A, the new building of the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK), from 19 to 21 April 2023, and honoured composer Iannis Xenakis's 100th birthday on the way.

The starting point was Xenakis's Polytope de Cluny of 1972, one of the early landmark works of immersive digital media art. The HfK aimed for “a contemporary interpretation — in the spirit of Xenakis, but with current technologies and concepts of immersion and interaction” (HfK press release).

Highlights

First event in a new art school

Built on Xenakis's own loudspeaker audio

Students from both HfK faculties

Students of HfK Bremen made the piece, guided by XENORAMA's Lorenz Potthast. They studied Xenakis's original 3D loudspeaker audio and answered it with a new composition for 32-channel spatial audio. Over it they laid a light production made for the building itself: 8 moving heads, 4 high-performance projectors and 12 motorised elements. The project has its own site at the HfK and a page in XENORAMA's portfolio.
