STRATA, Waterlight Festival - Brixen

INTRO

STRATA follows the life cycle of a glacier as a site-specific projection on the facade of the public library in Brixen, Italy. It premiered on 3 May 2023, commissioned by the Waterlight Festival.

The images and sounds go back to a research trip to the Aletsch Glacier in the Swiss Alps in summer 2018, where we recorded with camera, microphone and computer. From this material the animation follows the glacier from Microcosm to Macrocosm, from compressed layers of snow to meandering formations that shape whole landscapes.

Halfway through, visitors are guided into the heart of the glacier, where they can witness an interplay of ice, light and sonic phenomena. Also the role of technological advances and human influences on diverse ecosystems is explored, until the cycle begins anew.

ONE WEEK IN BRIXEN

STRATA was one part of a short festival presence. In the same week we showed LUMINOUS OBJECTS at the Waterlight Hub in Neustift and gave a workshop at a symposium at Neustift Abbey on 5 May 2023. More on the work at Xenorama.

A custom-made soundtrack carries the abstract animations, developing from atmospheric soundscapes to dynamic sound design and effects as the ice begins to move.
